Load balancers receive all client requests, and distribute the requests according to server availability, load, response time, and other performance metrics. The capability to intelligently route traffic allows IT managers to leverage commodity servers and intelligent Layer 4-7 technology to build high-capability infrastructure and to expand or reallocate that capacity transparently.
Another crucial benefit of load balancing technology is its ability to protect server farms and applications from Denial of Service (DoS), Worm and Virus threats from malicious Internet users.
Shared Load Balancing
The VeriCenter Shared Load Balancers support all general capabilities for load balancers. This includes basic load balancing, health checking to determine site availability, HTTP redirection, and session persistence. The load balancers are installed as high availability pairs in a each VeriCenter Internet Center to enhance reliability. They can be used in conjunction with a global load balancing solution across multiple locations to provide even more reliability.
Dedicated Load Balancing
For those customers whose business or technical requirements cannot be met by the Shared Load Balancers, VeriCenter can provide and manage dedicated appliances from F5, Foundry or Cisco.
Global Load Balancing
Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) enhances the dedicated and shared local load balancing products by expanding traffic management to geographically diverse sites. GSLB can be employed to improve web response time by transparently steering the end user to a specific site in accordance with the customer's business practices. GSLB improves web site availability by automatically redirecting the customer away from failed sites and to alternate available sites. VeriCenter's GSLB can support load balancing both between its six Internet Centers and between its centers and the customer's premises. This allows a variety of different approaches to both application-specific site hosting and business continuity.
